EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Location: Remote (WFH) within New York City

Band of Parents (BOP) is a non-profit charitable organization funding pediatric cancer research. BOP’s goal is to fund less toxic, more effective treatments to increase the survival rate of children battling neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive pediatric cancer.

Since 2007, we have pledged more than $14 million dollars for neuroblastoma research. Thanks to research we have funded, the clinical landscape has profoundly changed. BOP is the largest private funder of neuroblastoma research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). We have funded two lifesaving treatments that are now front-line protocol at MSKCC: Hu3F8 (humanized antibody) and the neuroblastoma vaccine. Our funding and support of Hu3F8 and vaccine has helped push survival rates to above 50%. Hu3F8 was recently approved by the FDA, which will allow for wider distribution, resulting in many more lives being saved. In addition to our work with MSKCC, we fund promising clinical trials at major pediatric cancer centers worldwide, including Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and hospitals in Europe.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Executive Director (ED) for Band of Parents represents the organization, its values and mission at the highest levels. The ED will lead BOP and run the day-to-day operations of the organization. The ED will work closely with our member families, donors, sponsors and partners to lead BOP’s fundraising events, including the annual events: Play Like a Pro hockey game, Golf Tournament and Kids Walk for Kids with Cancer. The ED will also manage digital marketing fundraising campaigns and will work with the BOP Board of Directors in strategic planning to continue growing the organization.

The ED is a remote position, based in New York City or within a 30 minute commute of MSKCC. Meeting spaces/conference rooms are available as needed in the Manhattan area. There will be a limited amount of travel, as well as meetings to attend in the New York area.

The ED will report to the Board of Directors Chair. The ED will manage a Development Director (part-time) and Accountant (part-time).

Ideal candidates will possess at least five or more years of fundraising and/or sales/event management experience, possibly in a health or human services non-profit organization, but potentially a career-changer from the for-profit sector.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising and Marketing

Implement the development plan and achieve fundraising growth objectives.
Create, plan and execute fundraising activities such as Play Like a Pro Hockey Game in Memory of Talia Castellano, Annual Charity Golf Tournament, Kids Walk for Kids with Cancer, direct mail annual appeal, digital marketing and social media campaigns, email marketing and other fundraising activities.
Grow the organization’s donor and member base, communicate regularly with supporters and solicit contributions from donors. This includes communicating and working with member families, advising on their fundraising initiatives to support the efforts of BOP.
Research philanthropic foundations and write and submit proposals for grants. Provide any reporting necessary to meet grant requirements.
Manage the organization’s marketing materials and public relations opportunities, including maintenance of the website and coordinating and producing promotional videos.
Increase social media presence.
Coordinate the Associate Board meetings (every other month), including communication logistics, setting and distributing the agenda and running the meetings. Identify new Associate Board members.
Manage the Cycle for Survival efforts from Team Band of Parents including recruitment of participants and fundraising.

Program and Grants Management

Coordinate the semi-annual Medical Advisory Board (MAB) meetings including logistics, setting and distributing the agenda, running the meetings, taking the minutes and distributing the minutes post meetings. Manage MAB membership.
Identify new research projects to fund and communicate with the MAB regarding research proposals and solicit feedback and evaluations.
Manage all grantmaking activities including drafting agreements, scheduling payments and collecting progress reports from grantees.
Arrange and participate in conference calls and visits of grantee institutions for the Board.
Organize the annual meeting between MSKCC Neuroblastoma team and BOP members.
Manage the distribution of free blood pressure monitors for neuroblastoma patients.
Share compassion and connect with families/members in treatment and post treatment. Respond to member inquiries and provide resources and information as needed.

Administrative

Create and present the development plan and annual budget for Board approval in the 4^th quarter of the year.
Coordinate monthly Board meetings including communication logistics, setting and distributing the agenda, running the meetings, taking the minutes and distributing the minutes post meetings. Identify potential new Board Directors.
Retrieve all mail and process offline donations including depositing checks, keying into Neon CRM and working with the Accountant to key-in donations into QuickBooks.
Work with BOP’s Accountant to pay all expenses and key-in accordingly into QuickBooks.
Work with the Board Treasurer and Accountant to reconcile all bank accounts with QuickBooks at the end of each month and produce the monthly financial reports for the Board.
Update the Operations Manual as needed.
Manage the process of renewing the state registrations every year.
Coordinate with legal teams to keep written policies current and up-to-date.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Experience working at a senior executive level and managing a team. Experience leading a non-profit organization is highly desired.
Demonstrated experience in project and special event management, preferably in a membership organization.
Direct experience in fundraising for a non-profit organization(s) is strongly preferred, but not required. Must have a desire to directly solicit philanthropy gifts and sponsorship from individuals, corporations and foundations.
Ability to manage one’s own administrative support, i.e., meeting scheduling and management, email management, etc.
Strong communications and qualitative research skills, strong written and verbal skills required.
Experience working with and managing a Board of Directors.
Experience in social media is desirable.
Comfortable with office management and fundraising systems including Excel, Word, Dropbox, Constant Contact, Neon CRM and OneCause.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

BOP offers competitive compensation and a generous benefits package including Paid Time Off/Federal Holidays, medical, dental, & vision insurance (if required), 401K Retirement Plan with contribution, basic AD&D and life insurance, and a supportive and collaborative workplace culture. The salary range for this full-time position is $125,000-$145,000, plus a discretionary annual performance bonus.
