Position Summary

The Health and Inclusion Specialist is a member of the Camp Leadership Team and is responsible for providing training and mentorship to Day Camp staff on best inclusion practices. The Health and Inclusion Specialist is responsible for maintaining accurate health records for campers and staff as well as using their previous experience to create, evaluate, and implement behavior plans to ensure all campers have a safe and equitable summer.

La Casita Day Camp

La Casita, a beautiful and historic camp cherished by generations of Girl Scouts, is nestled peacefully in the hillsides above Claremont. Adjacent to the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, it is home to fascinating native plants and animals. There is no better place for girls to step away from the urban hustle and bustle and learn about the natural world and how humans can protect it.

The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior. 
- Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures. 
- Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship. 
Act as a member of the camp senior staff team both within activities and throughout the camp day to plan, direct, and supervise all camp operations. 
- Address program concerns in a timely manner; effectively communicate changes and concerns with the Outdoor Program Supervisor. 
- Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training. 
- Serve as a role model through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.  
- Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special programs, and other all-camp activities and camp functions. 
- Participate in senior staff meetings and lead daily staff meetings as needed.
- Assist where needed with camper “check-in” and “check-out”. 
- Provide staff support and provide outstanding customer service to families. 
- Plan and coordinate the camp snack menu.
- Provide camp staff with weekly camper reports to raise awareness of camper needs and accommodations.
- Function as an Acting Director in accordance with the LA County Children’s Camp Guidelines.
Provide care to meet the diverse needs of camp staff and campers.
- Lead daily medication management.
- Supervise and provide care for both staff and campers seeking medical attention.
- Provide First Aid coverage as needed.
- Provide direct care to staff within the scope of their skills, the camp’s health care manual, and treatment plan.
- Facilitate and mentor the inclusion of all campers including those with physical, emotional, behavioral, or developmental disabilities.
Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to state, American Camp Association, and GSGLA standards.
- Ensure camper health examinations are current and on file.
- Prepare and utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications.
- Prepare and record insurance and accident report forms.
- Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed.
- Maintain accurate files for each camper, including health forms, permission slips and child release forms; provide timely statistical and attendance reports on day camp participants.
Ensure a staff orientation session is delivered on medical services.
- Ensure camp staff and campers know their role related to health care and first aid.
- Perform first aid as needed throughout camp season.
Screen all campers who are arriving and departing camp.
- Verify health history and examination.
- Verify emergency authorization.
- Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases.
- Conduct a health assessment.
- Keep all medications used by campers.
Supervise sanitary conditions throughout camp.
- Report daily and observe cleanliness of areas throughout camp.
- Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Outdoor Program Supervisor.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must be 21 years of age as stated by the LA County Children’s Camp Guidelines.
Must be available for 10 weeks of day camp (June 18, 2025 - August 22, 2025) and training dates that will be scheduled prior to camp.
Must possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid Certification throughout the position’s employment dates. Training will be available.
Must have at least 2 years documented experience teaching or interacting in youth programming.
Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association.
Ability to spend time sitting, utilizing the computer, and standing and walking throughout the facilities.
Ability to lift up to 15 pounds periodically.
Must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience

College credits in health, child development, education, psychology, or related field.

GSGLA Employee Requirements

Comply with state-mandated reporter training
Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned
