The Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO), reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, is a key member of the LA Phil’s Executive Team. The CPO is involved at the highest level of strategic decision making for the LA Phil. In partnership with the CEO, Board of Directors, and Executive Team, the Chief Philanthropy Officer is responsible for creating and implementing the strategy to generate and maximize contributed income that supports the LA Phil mission, strategy, and priorities.
The CPO will serve as an ambassador for the LA Phil and personally raise visionary gifts at the highest level for the LA Phil’s mission. The CPO will lead, mentor and inspire an exceptionally talented team of senior development professionals, and will be responsible for management and development of the Board of Directors in close collaboration with the CEO. This will include a special focus on the recruitment of a diverse pool of directors to ensure that the board represents the community, and has the philanthropic capacity and experience to fulfill their roles as governors and leading supporters of the LA Phil.

Position Elements:
- Develop a keen understanding of institutional priorities. Provide the strategic vision and leadership to take LA Phil’s Philanthropy program to new levels of success.
- Work in partnership with the CEO, Board of Directors and Executive Team to develop and implement a strategy to increase philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, corporations, special events, e-philanthropy, and beyond.
- Manage a portfolio of prospects capable of making gifts of $1 million or more, primarily from board members and key donors of the LA Phil; identify, cultivate, and solicit transformational, major, principal, and planned gift donor prospects.
- Engage in solicitation and stewardship activities individually, and in collaboration with the CEO, Executive team, Philanthropy staff and Board.
- Play an active role with donors and advisors in negotiating complex gift agreements.
- Implement, articulate, and manage operational plans for all development activities, including long-term relationship management approaches.
- Institute best practices—identify, anticipate, and tap funding sources and trends, as appropriate, to help position LA Phil ahead of major funding changes or trends.
- Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders.
- Develop and implement innovative stewardship programs aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors.
- Design and implement institutional development strategies and broader decisions about mission, goal and objectives.
- Attend and staff, with regularity, LA Phil productions and special events.
- Support the Board and CEO in the identification, cultivation and recruitment of new members to the Board.
- Build on the latest thinking and best practice in non-profit governance to support an engaged, diverse board that contributes at the highest level of giving in the city, and that functions as a high-performing governance body.
- Assist in the orientation, support and “onboarding” process for new board members.
- Devise, lead, and support strategies to increase the board’s participation in the Philanthropy program.
- Plan, organize, and staff board orientation program and annual board retreat.
- Prepare and present regular reports for committee and board meetings, as needed.
- Lead, mentor, and motivate a highly skilled, experienced and effective team prepared to meet the ongoing challenges of engaging a diverse community of donors; measure and evaluate the performance and productivity of staff and direct reports.
- Serve as an advocate for the team within the LA Phil community; represent the team and articulate their accomplishments to colleagues.
- Work in close collaboration with colleagues in marketing/communications/business development, operations, finance, programs, production, and beyond.
- Commitment to mentor the Philanthropy team and provide professional development opportunities.
- Maintain a leadership style that is open and empowers staff through active communication and delegation.
- Identify opportunities for performance improvement of team and develop team members to optimize their capabilities.
- Possess superior organizational, time-management and follow-up skills.
