General Description: Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all United Way of Broward County (UWBC) finance, accounting and reporting activities. The Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the finance and audit committees and will work closely with the senior leadership team. The controller will:
- Lead the day-to-day finance operations with a budget of $30M - $40M
- Be responsible for the overall supervision, professional development, training and oversight of their direct staff.
- Ensure that UWBC has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct successful audits.
- Work closely with program leaders and their staff to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures.
- Explore how the finance function can support program operations.
- Partner with CFO, senior leadership, HR and IT staff to enhance and better integrate finance, HR and IT functions.
Primary Job Responsibilities & Duties:
- Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities, and develop and implement training programs to maximize and reach optimal individual goals.
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
- Coordinate all audit activities and preparation of Form 990.
- Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the company’s financial status.
- Assist UWBC leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare actual results with a view to identify, explain and correct variances as appropriate.
- Support the CFO engaging the board’s audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
- Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate and foundation grants.
- Manage operational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the program directors and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.
- Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.

- As needed, participates in committees and work groups that involve finance functions of the company.
- Use discretion and judgment in the performance of duties every day and make critical decisions affecting financial operations.
- Assist in maintaining Council on Accreditation (COA) standards.
- Work closely with, and fully supports the COA and Performance and Quality Improvement (PQI) committees to understand the strategic priorities that align with the agency goals.
- Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
- Due to the leadership role United Way is called upon to play in the community, particularly during times of crisis, it is the expectation that all United Way staff will be fully engaged in the organization's crisis plan and response efforts.
Supervises: This position will supervise the team including functional responsibility over: accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and grants administration.
Education & Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Business Administration required; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
- Seven to ten years’ accounting and finance experience, ideally beginning in accounting and audit, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to executive teams and stakeholders.
- Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll and accounting for investments.
- Must have a successful history in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting for government, corporate and foundation grants is essential.
- Prior supervisory experience is required; Must have commitment to onboarding, mentoring, training and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly.
- Keen analytic, organization and critical thinking skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting.
- Proficiency required in MS Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and other related accounting programs required.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board or other outside partners.
- Ability and desire to translate simple complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance staff.
- The ideal candidate will have experience in complex nonprofit financial operations that have multiple programs. Environment & Physical Demands: The environment is climate controlled (i.e., heated and air-conditioned). Lighting is adequate through overhead lighting as well as windows and blinds.
