Summary/Objective
As a member of the Department of Evangelization and Missionary Discipleship, the Associate Director for Evangelical Charity is, first and foremost, a missionary disciple. This role collaborates with the larger department team to fulfill the call of missionary conversion and to Unleash the Gospel throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit.
As the leader of the Office of Evangelical Charity, the Associate Director leads the archdiocesan-wide efforts to support Families of Parishes (FOPs) in bringing about robust plans for the practice of evangelical charity, such that our service to the poor and marginalized becomes “a clear witness to Jesus our Lord, not mistaken for humanist philanthropy,” through the lens of the Detroit Model of Evangelization. This work is accomplished by providing direction, support, and accompaniment for FOP Directors of Evangelical Charity. This position will also act as a liaison to Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan (CCSEM), St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP), the Knights of Columbus (K of C), Catholic Relief Services, Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Catholic Chaplains, Parish Nurses, and the various Mission Partner organizations within the archdiocese.
Essential Functions
- Leads the Office of Evangelical Charity to help FOPs foster a culture of evangelical charity throughout their communities through the practice of the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy.
- Ensures that charitable works in the Archdiocese of Detroit are authentic expressions of Catholic faith and intentional opportunities for evangelization.
- Maintains a proactive and collaborative working relationship with Catholic Charities of Southeastern Michigan (CCSEM), the charitable arm of the Archdiocese of Detroit.
- Assists CCSEM in achieving their “noble purpose” of engaging everyday Catholics in acts of evangelical charity.
- Assists parish leadership in raising awareness and encouraging support of the programs and resources offered through CCSEM.
- Works closely with FOP Directors of Evangelical Charity to help them in their leadership. This includes overseeing their initial formation, continuing education, and regular accompaniment throughout their work.
- Assists parish leadership, staff, and key volunteers in raising awareness and encouraging support of the programs and resources offered through Mission Partner organizations.
- Creates and nurtures a network of Evangelical Charity Ministers within the Archdiocese by publishing announcements, writing newsletters, and hosting retreats and networking events.
- Coordinates and executes diocesan-wide evangelical charity events, such as Mission Partners Expo, Giving Tree, Christmas and Easter outreach events, Adopt a Family, and Life Issues ministry activities.
- Provides referrals to appropriate resources for those in crisis or who have immediate needs, such as the CCSEM hotline and/or St. Vincent de Paul conferences.
- Acts as the diocesan point of contact to the USCCB for issues related to justice in immigration.
- Acts as a liaison between the Department of Evangelization and Missionary Discipleship and CCSEM, SVdP, K of C and other Mission Partner organizations in support of Christian charity.
- Attends and participates in regular department-wide prayer, formation, and professional development.
- Works to improve the literacy and practice of Catholic Social Teaching within the Archdiocese of Detroit.
- Supervises, coaches, and supports members of the Evangelical Charity Team, including performance evaluations/appraisals, goal setting, and professional development.
- Provide support and expertise to other departments in the Chancery as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the department director.

Physical demands
Position requires the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work. May involve some lifting, carrying, pushing/or pulling of objects and materials (5-50 pounds). May involve extended periods of time standing or sitting at a keyboard or workstation. May involve repetitive motion (i.e., typing). May involve walking long distances.
Travel required: 25% within the Archdiocese of Detroit
Required education and experience
- Two to five years’ experience supervising and managing employees.
- Degree in Theology, Social Work, or related field required. A master’s degree is preferred but not necessary.
- Willingness and capacity to pursue higher education in the field of theology and ministry.
- Basic understanding of Catholic Social Teaching.
Preferred education and experience
- Two to five years’ experience as a Christian Service Coordinator, or relevant experience.
Additional eligibility requirements
- Must be a Catholic in good standing who embraces and transmits the teachings of the church on matters of faith and morals.
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Must be able travel throughout the AOD.
- Must have a valid driver’s license
