CYO Camp and Retreat Center offers residential camping adventures and retreat opportunities to youth and adults year round. CYO Camp and Retreat Center reaches out to people of all backgrounds throughout the greater Bay Area including the most economically impacted and underserved urban areas.
CYO Camp Outdoor Environmental Education and Caritas Creek at CYO Camp offer residential camping adventures and environmental educational opportunities to schools from the Bay Area.
The Program Naturalist works as part of a team responsible for delivering quality instruction within the established CYO Camp and Retreat Center’s OEE Programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Functions as part of a staff team to maintain and improve the Outdoor Environmental Education programs at CYO Camp and Retreat Center.
- Assist in the continued development and delivery of the established OEE curriculums.
- Will be prepared to teach and facilitate all curriculum areas through research, class outlines and peer observation.
- Ability to use multi-disciplinary learning activities such as games, scientific exploration and group discussion to teach environmental concepts.
- Teaches classes and facilitates activities in the curriculum areas of Natural Sciences, Environmental Stewardship, Community Building (including the Low Ropes Challenge Course) and Cultural/Living History.
- Provide a flexible program to adapt to the variety of needs and desires of our guests focusing on excellent customer service.
- Provide instruction that includes Catholic Social Teachings and Faith Formation elements.
- Lead and facilitate hiking groups of students in various ecosystems including Redwood Forest, Creek Watersheds, and Pacific Coastal regions.
- Facilitate group activities that focus on social interaction building a sense of cooperation and self-esteem.
- Will provide leadership through facilitation of evening activities, health and safety aspects of living outdoors, arts and crafts, student electives, leading meals, songs, skits and overall student supervision.
- Participate in staff meetings that include self-evaluation and discussion of the weekly evaluation by students, teachers and cabin leaders addressing personal curriculum knowledge, presentation and program evaluation.
- Responsible for the general facility and equipment upkeep on a daily basis. Maintains the CYO Camp and Retreat Center’s facility and natural environment for safety and cleanliness including daily, weekly and end of season clean-up.
- Maintain a clean living environment inside and outside of assigned living quarters.
- May require serving as a Cabin Leader with students on a rotational basis.
- May require working some weekends as assigned.
- Abides within the Personnel Policies of Catholic Charities and CYO Camp and Retreat Center.

Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Environmental Studies, Science or related disciplines
- Experience working with youth in outdoor settings of various ecosystems
- Experience working with youth from a variety of ethnic and socio-economic background
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Committed to the mission of Catholic Charities of San Francisco and be able to implement this mission through all camp programs and interpret this mission and purpose to our guests.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism along with supportive team interactions
- Working knowledge of the general sciences including: Geology, Biology, Botany, Ecology and Chemistry
- Positive attitude, high energy, enthusiastic and service minded when relating and working directly with children and adults
- Ability to communicate to a diverse group of students
- Ability to remain calm in stressful situations
- Ability to identify and respond to environmental and surrounding hazards related to and affecting the delivery of activities throughout the camp property
- Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness and enforce the established safety and emergency operating procedures. Communicate possible violations of such to the CYO Camp and Retreat Center Leadership and immediate supervisor
- Demonstrates the necessary attitudes, knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in cross-cultural situations.
