El Puente seeks a dedicated and socially conscious Sports Facilitator to join our Beacon team. The position will utilize El Puente’s model for youth leadership and community development to nurture the next generation of leaders

The Sports Facilitator will foster an atmosphere of fun, learning, growth, and teamwork, serving as a mentor to El Puente’s youth members. A Sports Facilitator is a professional who is responsible for developing and facilitating the sports program. The Sports Facilitator plans, organizes, and supervises sports and recreational activities for middle school youth during after-school hours, promoting physical activity, teamwork, and positive role modeling.

This position reports directly to the Program Director and Assistant Program Director.  The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, flexible, team-oriented environment and is motivated by challenges. Threey will be able to build relationships with young people and their families, create collaborations, have a passion for social justice, and understand how movement and community-building work take place through liberatory, meaningful interactions and co-learning with youth members and their families.

Who We Are:

Founded in 1982, El Puente is a youth-centered organization that uses the arts and education to advance social and environmental justice.  Its mission is to inspire and nurture leadership for peace and justice, working as a human rights institution in NYC and Puerto Rico with national and international impact. El Puente creates community-led movements of self-determination through a holistic leadership and membership program model as a high-impact youth and community development organization.  As a staff member of El Puente, the Sports Facilitator is expected to uphold and work within the mission, philosophy, and principles of the organization. 

El Puente integrates its activities and community campaigns within its six Youth Leadership Centers and its nationally recognized public high school, the El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice. Organizing in North Brooklyn, Puerto Rico, and beyond, El Puente is at the forefront of community & youth development, and as such, initiates social policy locally and nationally.

Position Overview:

Sports facilitators serve as instructors during after-school hours. The middle school program operates Mondays through Fridays from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM and serves students in grades 6-8.  The Sports Facilitator plans, organizes, and supervises sports and recreational activities for middle school youth during after-school hours, promoting physical activity, teamwork, and positive role modeling.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing and implementing after-school sports programs and activities..
  • Ensuring programs are age-appropriate and engaging.
  • Recruiting and enrolling students into the program.
  • Supervising students during after-school sports activities.
  • Providing instruction and guidance in sports skills and techniques.
  • Ensuring a safe and positive environment for all participants.
  • Promoting participation in sports and activities.
  • Working with other staff members to coordinate activities.
  • Assisting in planning and implementing after-school programs.
  • Ability to lead and motivate students, communicate effectively with parents and staff, and foster a positive team environment. 
  • Other related duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Passion for Sports and Physical Activity
  • A genuine interest in sports and a desire to promote physical activity among children. 
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement after-school sports programs and activities. 
  • Understanding of child development and appropriate activities for different age groups. 
  • First Aid and CPR Certification:
  • Ability to provide basic first aid and CPR in case of emergencies. 

COVID-19 considerations:

All new hires must submit proof of vaccination.

Location:

This is a part-time position based in Brooklyn, NY. 

Schedule:

Generally, Two days per week.   Workdays and hours may shift depending on scheduling needs; the typical schedule will be 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Salary and Benefits:

$35 per hour and legal benefits.
