The Team
CZI supports the science and technology that will make it possible to help scientists cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of this century. While this may seem like an audacious goal, in the last 100 years, biomedical science has made tremendous strides in understanding biological systems, advancing human health, and treating disease.
Achieving our mission will only be possible if scientists are able to better understand human biology. To that end, we have identified four grand challenges that will unlock the mysteries of the cell and how cells interact within systems — paving the way for new discoveries that will change medicine in the decades that follow:
- Building an AI-based virtual cell model to predict and understand cellular behavior
- Developing state-of-the-art imaging systems to observe living cells in action
- Instrumenting tissues to better understand inflammation, a key driver of many diseases
- Engineering and harnessing the immune system for early detection, prevention, and treatment of disease
CZI’s work in science includes grantmaking programs, open-source software development, and close collaboration with the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network. The CZ Biohub Network includes the San Francisco, Chicago, and New York Biohubs as well as the Chan Zuckerberg Imaging Institute. CZI also collaborates with institutional partners like the Kempner Institute for the Study of Natural & Artificial Intelligence at Harvard University. Join us in accelerating science.
The Opportunity
At CZI, we are generating unprecedented scientific datasets that drive biological modeling innovation:
- Billions of standardized cells of single-cell transcriptomic data, with a focus on measuring genetic and environmental perturbations
- 10s of thousands of donor-matched DNA & RNA samples
- PB-scale static and dynamic imaging datasets
- TB-scale mass spectrometry datasets
- Diverse, large multi-modal biological datasets that enable biological bridges across measurement types and facilitate multi-modal model training to define how cells act.
- Infrastructure to support the ingestion, validation, standardization, use, and publishing of these datasets
As a Principal Product Manager, you’ll be responsible for packaging and releasing these datasets as products for the broader scientific community, for co-releasing tools and infrastructure that enable scientists to leverage the data effectively to train models, for maintaining and growing CZI's brand as a leader of open science, and for establishing sustainable access policies that control costs of massive-scale data access.
Join us in building the data foundation that will transform CZI's model training efforts, and accelerate our and the scientific community's understanding of human biology so that we can cure, prevent, and manage all disease.
What You'll Do
- Define the long-term product vision and 3-year strategic roadmap for CZI's foundational scientific datasets, describing how they enable CZI's scientific challenges, establishing our datasets as definitive, high-value products for the global scientific community.
- Own the 'Data-as-a-Product' experience, including defining dataset schemas, metadata standards, documentation, and tooling co-releases that maximize scientists’ ability to leverage the data for biological modeling.
- Establish and execute the market strategy for the data products, identifying key scientific user segments, driving community adoption, and fostering an ecosystem of tools built atop CZI's open data.
- Define and monitor key product success metrics (e.g., scientific citation count, model training usage, external adoption rate, cost-per-user efficiency) to ensure CZI's investment generates maximum scientific return.
- Develop and maintain transparent, cost-aware access and governance policies that ensure data security, regulatory compliance, and the long-term sustainability of hosting petabyte-scale scientific resources.
- Serve as the primary external advocate and evangelist for the data products, collaborating with scientific leaders, grantees, and data platform partners to grow CZI's brand as a leader in open, transformative scientific data.
What You'll Bring
- Deep domain expertise in very-large-scale data, as demonstrated by management of 2 or more very large scale (100s TBs-PBs) data products across multiple phases of their lifecycles.
- Proven mastery of the product lifecycle, including conducting market research, defining user personas (e.g., academic researcher, industry data scientist), translating complex data into clear, consumable product packages, release, scaling, and sunsetting of products.
- Expertise in establishing product-market fit and driving adoption within a highly specialized technical community, demonstrating impact on user workflow acceleration.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and evolve business models or sustainable access policies for massive-scale data, balancing open science principles with operational and cost constraints.
- Experience leading and influencing cross-functional teams (Engineering, Science, Legal, Finance) to align on a singular product vision for foundational scientific assets.
- 12+ years of product management experience, with a demonstrated track record of defining, launching, and scaling data products or scientific platforms for an external community.
