JOB PURPOSE
Reporting to the VP Finance the Director of Finance is responsible for the daily financial operations of the organization. This is a key role that ensures efficient and effective financial processes are maintained to enable timely and insightful financial information, vital to supporting decision making at all levels of the organization. Managing an experienced finance team, the Director oversees accounting, payroll, cash management, financial reporting & analysis, budgeting & forecasting and financial system maintenance. They contribute to and monitor the evaluation of options for business and program development, including revenue and expenditure setting; ensure compliance with accounting and auditing principles; implement corporate operational policies such as contracting and procurement; and recommend strategies for financial and operational management. The Director engages significantly in finance and works closely with all management and staff to ensure integrated and coordinated delivery across all business lines.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Management and Oversight · Advise executive and senior management on finance and accounting matters, annual audit, annual budget & forecasts, corporate insurance and financial risks. · Develop, implement and maintain efficient accounting and financial systems, internal controls, approval levels of confidentiality and security, reports, and databases to ensure timely, complete and accurate financial information for both audit trail and decision making. · Ensure financial policies and procedures are developed and adhered to throughout the organization and contribute to and monitor the evaluation of options for business and program development, including revenue and expenditure setting. Operations and Risk Management · Bring financial and risk assessment rigour to business plans and for the development and negotiation of revenue-generating proposals, partnership agreements, contracts and product offerings. · Administer corporate investments and contractual activities, including contracts, leases, insurance and other legal documents and agreements. · Implement, communicate, and ensure compliance with corporate procurement policies and procedures as approved by the Board of Directors. Management and Team Development · Assist the executive and senior management in strategic planning, including budgeting, forecasting and business plans, and identifying appropriate KPIs based on both industry and internal standards. · Lead all aspects of the finance team, including day-to-day functions related to planning, performance, reporting and customer interactions. · Provide direction, mentoring and technical guidance to team members, and support their professional development. · Prepare reports and provide recommendations and information to the Board and Committees as required.
SKILLS AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES ·
Seasoned knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and costing, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles · Proficiency in analyzing financial data and preparing financial reports, statements, and projections · Easily and effectively synthesizes and communicates complex information to various audiences · Significant experience with financial systems, policy and procedure development and process improvement. · Knowledge of federal and provincial financial and tax regulations · Experience with contracting, negotiating, and change management · Skilled with multi-tasking and problem solving in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented and dynamic environment · Strong leadership, influencing and motivational skills with ability to create a positive work environment · Excellent listening, communication and team management skills
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS ·
Professional accounting designation (CPA) required · Post secondary degree in Accounting/Finance required · At least 8 years’ experience in accounting with management roles for the last 4+ years · Experience in both not-for-profit and for-profit sectors is an asset
