Position Summary:
The Director of Practice Management (DPM) will lead the strategic and operational oversight of the firm's practice areas, ensuring optimal efficiency, attorney productivity, client service delivery, and integration across offices. This is a key leadership role that bridges law firm operations, knowledge management, innovation, and attorney support.
Key Responsibilities:
Practice Operations & Efficiency
- Develop and implement firm-wide practice management initiatives, systems, and processes to support attorney performance and practice area growth.
- Monitor KPIs related to attorney utilization, billing, realization, and matter management; identify and address trends or performance issues.
- Collaborate with IT, Finance, and HR to support practice area needs, including staffing models, training, and technology tools.
- Partner with leadership to develop and manage annual budgets, forecasts, and operational plans for practice areas.
Attorney Support & Integration
- Facilitate the onboarding, training, and integration of new attorneys, especially lateral hires, to ensure alignment with firm culture, standards, and expectations.
- Work closely with practice group leaders to ensure optimal delegation, staffing, and workload balance across attorneys and offices.
- Coordinate with HR and attorney development teams to identify training needs, career paths, and succession planning strategies.
Strategic Initiatives & Practice Growth
- Partner with the Business Development team to identify and execute on growth opportunities, market positioning, and client service enhancements.
- Evaluate and implement best practices in practice management, drawing from legal industry trends, benchmarks, and technology innovations.
- Assist practice groups in developing strategic plans, including attorney development, succession planning, and practice expansion initiatives.
Cross-Office Collaboration & Consistency
- Facilitate consistent application of firm policies, procedures, and best practices across all 12 offices.
- Promote a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing across offices and practice groups.
- Travel to offices as needed to support in-person engagement, relationship building, and performance management.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Legal Studies, Management, or a related field.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in a legal or professional services environment, including 5+ years in a practice management or operational leadership role.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams, drive change, and manage complex operations.
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
- Strong analytical skills and fluency in using metrics to support decision-making.
- Comfortable with legal technology, CRM systems, practice management tools, and Excel.
Preferred:
- JD, MBA, or related advanced degree.
- Private wealth or estate planning background.
- Experience in a law firm with multiple offices.
Target Salary Range: $170,000 – $195,000 annually. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant experience and training, skills set, current business needs, market factors, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This role will also be eligible for an annual discretionary variable incentive bonus.
