Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Director of Fitness & Healthy Living, the Group Exercise & Fitness Coordinator provides leadership and oversight for the YMCA’s Group Exercise program while supporting fitness floor operations and equipment quality control. This role is responsible for hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising instructor staff to ensure high-quality, safe, and engaging member experiences.
As a key member of the Fitness Leadership Team, the Coordinator plays an integral role in leading staff, advancing member engagement, and supporting department-wide goals in wellness, community connection, and program excellence. This position contributes to the success of the Fitness & Healthy Living Department through staff leadership, program innovation, operational excellence, and a strong commitment to the YMCA’s mission and values.
Qualifications
- Must hold a current group exercise certification from one of the following groups: American Council on Exercise (ACE), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) or equivalent.
- 3+ years of practical experience in health and wellness preferred.
- Enjoy, be skilled at and understand the importance of building relationships with people: members, staff, volunteers, donors, and community leaders.
- Proficient in windows-based programs i.e. Word, Excel and Publisher. Able to receive and maintain CPR, first aid, AED certifications.
- Previous supervisory experience required.
Essential Functions
Leadership & Staff Development
- Serve as a member of the Fitness Leadership Team, collaborating with the Director and Associate Directors to achieve departmental goals.
- Lead, coach, and mentor Group Exercise Instructors and Fitness Floor Staff to maintain high standards of professionalism, engagement, and safety.
- Model instructional excellence by teaching classes, mentoring instructors, and providing regular coaching and feedback to elevate program quality and consistency.
- Conduct regular staff meetings and evaluations, fostering a culture of communication, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Identify and facilitate ongoing professional development and certification opportunities.
Program Oversight & Innovation
- Oversee all aspects of the Group Exercise program, including hiring, scheduling, supervision, evaluation, and instructor onboarding through the GroupEx Pro platform.
- Teach and substitute Group Exercise classes as needed to maintain program consistency and quality. Ensure instructional coverage for all scheduled classes and train substitutes to meet YMCA standards.
- Collaborate with the Director to develop, expand, and implement innovative wellness programs and classes that align with member needs and industry trends.
- Support fitness floor operations and personal training initiatives, ensuring consistency in quality, service, and program delivery.
- Monitor participation and usage data, using metrics to inform program decisions and resource allocation.
Operational & Administrative Management
- Monitor departmental expenses, assist with budget management, and ensure timely and accurate bi-weekly payroll processing.
- Coordinate ordering, inventory, and maintenance of equipment and supplies for both Group Exercise and Fitness operations.
- Conduct regular inspections to ensure equipment functionality, safety, and cleanliness; log maintenance requests and ensure completion.
- Support operational excellence by ensuring proper coverage, communication, and coordination across all areas of the Fitness Department.
Member Engagement & Experience
- Promote Group Exercise and Wellness programs across the branch and in collaboration with the Membership team.
- Build strong, positive relationships with members, staff, and volunteers that reflect the YMCA’s commitment to community and belonging.
- Support initiatives that enhance member satisfaction, retention, and participation in YMCA wellness activities.

- Work with the Development Team, HR and key philanthropy volunteers to increase your understanding and skill set.
- Build strategic relationships with members for year-round member cultivation to increase the number of member campaign volunteers and donors.
- Assist in achieving your department annual support campaign goal by directly and personally participating in campaign efforts and ongoing fundraising by identifying new volunteers and potential new donors.
Required Certifications
