Position: Facility Staff (Community Y)
Position Status: Part-Time (8-10 hours per week, weekends & time off covered as needed)
Compensation: $15.50 per hour

About the role:
Reporting to the Community Y Program Director, the Facility Cleaner plays a vital role in ensuring that the YMCA facility is clean, safe, and welcoming for members, guests, and staff. This position involves general cleaning and maintenance tasks within the building, as well as upkeep of exterior areas, including sidewalks and entryways. The ideal candidate will be reliable, detail-oriented, and committed to maintaining a clean and organized environment that promotes health and wellness.
In this role, you will:
- Delivery of Serving All Member (SAM) quality standards through provision of welcoming, inclusive, and positive participant experience. Includes general cleaning and maintenance tasks inside and outside the building. Provide a clean and organized environment that promotes health and wellness.
- Facility cleanliness, includes performing routine cleaning tasks in all areas of the Community Y, including but not limited to gymnasiums, locker rooms, bathrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas. Sweep, mop, vacuum, and buff floors to ensure they are clean and safe. Dust and wipe down surfaces, such as counters, windowsills, tables, and equipment. Disinfect high-touch areas, including door handles, light switches, and restrooms, ensuring a hygienic environment. Clean and maintain restrooms, ensuring they are stocked with necessary supplies (e.g., soap, toilet paper, paper towels).
- Perform basic maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs, fixing minor leaks, and addressing minor wear and tear in the facility. Report any significant maintenance issues to the Program Director, Community Y, for repair. Monitor inventory levels of cleaning supplies and report the need for replenishment.
- Clear sidewalks, entryways, and parking lots of debris, litter, and hazards. Ensure snow and ice are removed from exterior walkways and driveways during the winter months, utilizing appropriate equipment. Maintain the cleanliness and safety of outdoor spaces, including entrances, patios, and recreational areas.
- Follow all health and safety guidelines to maintain a clean and safe environment. Ensure cleaning chemicals are used safely and according to manufacturer guidelines. Adhere to YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth policies and procedures, including safety protocols.
- Assist with special cleaning projects as needed, such as deep cleaning events or post-event cleanup. Collaborate with other team members to ensure all areas of the facility are maintained to YMCA standards.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Skills Qualifications:
- Previous experience in cleaning or janitorial work is preferred.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to cleanliness and safety.
- Ability to lift and move cleaning equipment and supplies as needed.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as required.
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and safe handling practices is a plus.
- Ability to handle physical tasks, including standing, bending, and lifting.
- Flexibility to work irregular hours required
