POSITION SUMMARY:

The Dog Training Manager is responsible for overseeing and implementing Seattle Humane’s public dog training classes. This position ensures that the program is delivered within budget and quality service are met. They supervise and hire the Dog Training Instructors (independent contractors), the puppy socialization coach and department volunteers. The Dog Training Manager supports the mission, goals and philosophy of Seattle Humane.

KEY OR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Supervises Dog Training and other class Instructors (independent contractors).
- Selects, trains, schedules and evaluates performance of Seattle Humane Dog Trainers.
- Ensures adherence to Seattle Humane standards of professionalism and humane training.
- Maintains compliance with any safety, health and labor regulations.
Teaches Dog Training classes, workshops and seminars.
- Is the lead or co-instructor for a portion of the classes that Seattle Humane offers.
Maintains Public Dog Training email account and voicemail, providing customer service to prospective and current clients.

Responsible for creating and implementing training curriculum for all classes, in collaboration with the External Relations Director, Animal Care Director and Behavior Manager.
- Works closely with the operations management team to align curriculum with Seattle Humane sheltering and behavior practices.
- Regularly evaluates class content to ensure consistency and incorporate new research in the field.

Oversees department volunteers

Monitors compliance with animal handling, safety and other policies and procedures.
Responsible for increasing volunteer participation and responsibility in the dog training department.
Coordinates and regularly works with Volunteer Services team to ensure consistent volunteer support.

Coordinates with Communications/Marketing team to provide content for website, print materials and social media related to dog training.
Collaborates with Communications/Marketing team, Animal Care Director and Behavior Manager to provide regular behavior and training resource content updates and additions for Seattle Humane’s website.
Manages dog training merchandise sales and promotion during classes, collaborating with Behavior Manager to identify items for Seattle Humane’s onsite retail store.
Joins the Animal Care Director and Behavior Manager in serving as an expert and spokesperson for media inquiries around animal behavior and dog training.
Performs outreach to local veterinary offices, dog trainers and community organizations to share information about classes, establish partnerships and build additional programming
Prepares monthly reports and/or other data as requested.
Submits department budget requests; follows established annual budget amounts for assigned accounts.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

Monitors assigned inventory of dog training program supplies. Orders regularly to ensure adequate supply.
Maintains appropriate files and records. Adheres to the files and records retention policy.
Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervises the Dog Training Instructors, Puppy Socialization Coach and volunteers assigned to the program.

COMMUNICATION/INTERPERSONAL CONTACT:

Daily verbal or written communication with staff through direct contact, meetings, telephone, mail or e-mail
Daily or weekly verbal and written contact with community partners, instructors, students, volunteers or the public over the telephone, in person or by e-mail
Occasional verbal communication for public community events or media interviews about dog training programs

COMPLEXITY:

A high degree of independent judgment is required. Diverse duties on a weekly basis are to be expected, as routine varies day to day. Must be able to coordinate staff and volunteers and remain focused on the organizational goals and objectives. Needs attention to detail and must be able to respond to unexpected questions, comments or requests from other departments or the general public. The ability to motivate, negotiate and mediate will be helpful when handling a variety of personalities and emotions.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

Proven knowledge and experience in teaching basic and advanced dog obedience using humane methods.
Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact with the public, volunteers and co-workers in a pleasant, courteous and tactful manner.
Excellent verbal, public speaking and telephone skills.
Organizational and planning skills to determine work priorities, schedules and time.
Animal health background helpful, animal shelter experience preferred.
Must be proficient in Word, email and internet use.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Certification in dog training such as through CCPDT or IAABC is strongly preferred.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Must possess good attention to detail, be able to concentrate and produce accurate work despite frequent interruptions. Needs to be sensitive to other opinions, perspectives or cultures. Must feel comfortable in dealing with angry, confused and/or emotional people. Must be able to stand for long periods of time; to lift and carry at least 40 pounds; to kneel, crouch, bend and reach. Must possess good hand-eye coordination, agility and stamina. Must possess good senses of hearing, vision and touch.

WORKING CONDITIONS: General office/classroom, and animal training facility environment. In addition, the handling of animals presents the potential for bites and exposure to zoonotic diseases, animal dander and noise. Potential for working with angry or emotional customers.

Equipment Use: Continuous use of computer, printer, fax, copy machine, multi-line telephone, and animal restraint or animal training devices.
Chemical Interaction: A wide variety of cleaners, disinfectants, detergents and medical products are used daily. Each position at the SH will likely encounter these chemicals during the routine performance of their duties. Specific instructions will be provided by a SH staff member for the safe and proper use of these chemicals. If there are any questions regarding this information, copies of our chemical MSDS sheets are available for review. If asked to use a product that is unfamiliar, contact your supervisor for proper instructions.
Work Hours: Full-time, 40 hours a week including evening and weekend hours. Attendance required at all-staff meetings and assigned training workshops or meetings. Some travel may be required for trainings and/or conferences.
