Organizational Overview:
Charities Aid Foundation America (CAF America) is a U.S. 501(c)(3) public charity specializing in international grantmaking. CAF America's mission is to increase the flow of contributions to charitable organizations in the U.S. and around the world by providing grant making, charity validation and advisory services to families, individuals, corporations, and foundations that want their giving to be safe, easy, legally compliant and effective.
With headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, CAF America has a staff of over 130 employees. Since it was established in 1992, CAF America has made $5.3 billion in grants to hundreds of thousands of eligible organizations in over 135 countries. CAF America is a complex organization as a subsidiary of CAF UK and has its own subsidiaries in Toronto, Canada (CAF Canada) and London, UK (CAF American Donor Fund).
Summary:
The Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO) leads the teams that work to achieve CAF America’s charitable impact objectives. Those objectives are to foster a favorable global giving ;environment and to enable CAF America’s donors and charity partners to achieve greater social impact.
The CPO oversees the Impact & Partnerships, Philanthropy Services, and Business Development Teams. The CPO works directly with the President and CEO to advance cross-organizational initiatives, including strategic partnerships and the delivery of products and services to donors and charity partners. The CPO will also work closely with CAF in the UK and CAF Canada to align and advance our strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership

Oversees the direction of the Impact & Partnerships, Philanthropy Services, and Business Development Teams.

Provides management, mentoring, and professional development of direct reports.

Serves on CAF America’s Executive Teams, actively collaborating with other Executives to lead CAF America.

Serves as the lead staff person for the Board Philanthropy Committee, working closely with the chair of the committee.

Leads budget development based on projections, contributions targets, and our three-year strategic plan for the teams and activities within their responsibility.
Strategy Development and Implementation

Oversees the achievement of CAF America’s business strategy, charitable contributions, and grant distributions targets through business development and cultivating relationships with donors and charities.

Defines and facilitates cross-team strategy and works closely with the CEO to create an inspiring vision for achievement of CAF America’s core purpose, including coordinating team efforts to ensure that our products and services remain responsive to the needs of our donors and charity partners and to trends and regulatory changes in the philanthropic sector.
Partnerships and External Affairs

Cultivates strategic partnerships that enhance our services, increase our visibility in the sector, and elevate our research and thought leadership initiatives.

Represents CAF America at speaking engagements, conferences, and general client or charity outreach initiatives or educational sessions. This includes a 15-20% travel requirement.

Collaborates with the President and CEO as an external voice of the organization, with the goal of developing and advancing other CAF America staff as known and respected external voices, sharing our expertise across external audiences.
Expertise and Training

Maintains expertise in DAF regulations, US charity regulations, corporate social responsibility and foundation and individual philanthropy developments, and foreign funding requirements in local grantee countries.

Facilitates the continuous education of CAF America staff to foster an independent staff capable of answering complex questions.
Supervisory Requirements:
The CPO manages up to four department leaders who supervise 40+ employees in the Impact & Partnerships, Philanthropy Services, and Business Development Teams. The CPO is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

10+ years of experience leading teams.

Results-driven and experienced leader working in the nonprofit development field or in philanthropy with a measured track record of success.

Has deep expertise in philanthropy and work with donors and charities, with a track record of successful donor cultivation and strategic partnership development.

Experience working with large foundations (family foundations, independent private foundations or corporate foundations) in a fundraising capacity and convening donors, inspiring their philanthropy and enhancing their charitable impact.

Bachelor’s Degree required. Master's degree (M.A./M.S.) preferred; 10-15 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
