The Office of Government Affairs coordinates and facilitates Stanford University’s and Stanford Health Care’s (SHC) interactions with all levels of government, as well as its relationship with neighboring communities. The office promotes the interests of the University’s and SHC’s key constituents through contact with the community, public officials, involvement with educational organizations, tracking of pertinent legislation, and direct advocacy on a wide variety of issues from land use policies to funding for the basic sciences to health care. The Office of Government Affairs supports the university’s academic mission of teaching and research and SHC’s mission by serving as the primary point of contact between the university, hospital, and our partners in federal, state and local governments.

Position Summary:
Stanford’s Office of Government Affairs is hiring for a new role to support the external relations work for Stanford Health Care. We are seeking a new dynamic and proactive Associate Director of Community Affairs for Stanford Health Care to join our team. This new role will be responsible for cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with external stakeholders, community organizations, business leaders, and local residents in the Redwood City area. This position will work closely with the Stanford Health Care Community Benefits team to strengthen and expand community relationships. This will include attending and coordinating community engagement activities on the ground in public and private sector meetings and events.
In this role, you will:
- Build, maintain, and expand relationships with key external stakeholders, including neighbors, community leaders and organizations, local government officials, nonprofit organizations, business leaders, and other relevant external parties.
- Contribute to development and implementation of strategic outreach and engagement plan for Stanford Health Care and key community constituencies to support and strengthen our organizations’ missions and objectives in support of the community and local government’s priorities.
- Plan and execute community outreach programs, events, and initiatives to foster positive relationships and increase awareness of Stanford Health Care’s impact and initiatives. Represent SHC at community events in the Redwood City area.
- Analyze and report on community feedback, engagement outcomes, public sentiment, and other key metrics for internal review
- Provide insights and recommendations based on community feedback to support decision-making and program development.
- Collaborate with internal departments to ensure alignment of external communications and community outreach activities with organizational goals. Work closely with government relations colleagues and local government stakeholders to influence policies and legislation that align with the organization’s mission.
- Act as a liaison between Stanford and external parties to ensure constructive dialogue and resolution of any community concerns and complaints in a timely manner
- Demonstrate a commitment to promoting and supporting an environment of diversity and inclusion.
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
- Advanced knowledge of local communities, government, nonprofit communities, and familiarity with community issues/concerns.
- Demonstrated experience in public relations, community outreach, or government affairs
- Advanced written and verbal communication, active listening skills, and the interpersonal skills needed to successfully work with a broad range of individuals, including Stanford stakeholders, local officials, business owners and the public.
- Collaborative team player; willingness and ability to reach out to many constituencies and understand their needs and priorities; an ability to move a group to consensus; strong interpersonal and influencing skills.
- Experience in shaping public attitude through the effective use of communication.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
- Experience working with local governments, community organizations, or public relations agencies within San Mateo County.
- Bilingual proficiency
Working Conditions:
- May require working flexible hours, including nights and weekends. Regular travel may be required.
