This position will be based on the Stanford campus and is a hybrid of working on-site and working from home, subject to operational need.
Stanford’s Department of Surgery is a leader in all types of research, from basic science, clinical trials and translational research. We are seeking a Research Manager to develop, implement, and administer the research vision, strategy, and goals. This position is 100% FTE with effort divided equally across the Division of Abdominal Transplantation (50%) and Division of Pediatric Surgery (50%). The Research Manager will work equally with faculty, fellows and students in each division to oversee the entire scope of research operations including development and execution of grant proposals to federal and non-federal funding agencies, compliance with research protocols, optimization of research workflows, and work to improve efficiency in research administration across both divisions. The incumbent will assist with increasing the competiveness of extramural funding proposals while ensuring continuity of research administration, strategic planning, and regulatory oversight.
Duties include:
- Develop and manage research programs by conducting research activities, including outreach to varied stakeholders within the program, assigning resources and making program improvement recommendations that impact policies and programs.
- Identify, recommend and implement opportunities and funding sources for new research.
- Source, collect and perform complex data analysis, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.
- Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities.
- Contribute to and inform on strategic program/entity planning and related funding and financial sustainability.
- Manage research personnel including direct oversight of Clinical Research Coordinators and coordination of various project stakeholders.
- May advise students and/or coach/mentor clients. Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities.
- Develop or contribute to outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships, and fundraising/funding.
- Supervise clinical research coordinators effort to ensure continuity of support to research operations and appropriate study documentation. Ensure compliance with all required institutional guidelines including NIH, FDA, trial.gov, OnCore including regular audits of study documentation.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced degree
- Strong knowledge of the grant submission process (NIH, TRDRP, NSF). This includes preparation and submission of proposals; developing protocols and obtaining IRB approval; creating forms, questionnaires, and surveys for data collection; establishing and managing subcontracts.
- Experience working in an academic or healthcare setting desired.
- Knowledge of Stanford systems is desirable.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree and three or more years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required for some programs. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
- Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
- Ability to oversee and direct staff.
- Basic knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans.
CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:
For teaching jobs, advanced degree or certification may be required for some programs.
