About us: Stanford University is seeking an experienced administrative professional to co-lead and administer activities, programs and functions overseen by Dr. Nigam Shah, Chief data scientist for Stanford Health Care. Stanford has a storied history of advancing artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine, and being at the forefront in translating research advances to practice. This requires deft alignment of activities in research labs and projects in the operational setting to realize Stanford’s long-term vision for harnessing artificial intelligence to support and enhance every aspect of health care delivery, research, and medical education.
This opportunity is situated in a unique partnership between one of the leading healthcare AI research teams (https://shahlab.stanford.edu/), and a newly formed data-science team which is part of the IT organization of the health system. We are looking for an experienced candidate with excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills to help manage this research and operational alignment.
About the job: Primary responsibilities include the development and management of programs, including but not limited to:
- Lead the AI for Cost-effective, Accurate, Reliable, and Ethical Solutions (AI-Care) program, which includes overseeing projects by students in training, co-incubation of projects, and projects in partnership with external entities.
- Develop the GUIDE-AI lab, which is tasked with developing methods for prospective evaluations of AI tools in healthcare and broadly disseminating our evaluation methods and processes to national groups such as the Coalition for Health AI.
- Coordinate student research, IRB covered projects and sponsored research (federal as well as philanthropic) with operational activities.
- Manage the interface between activities in the research portfolio and those in the operational portfolio.
- Represent the data science team externally in front of sponsors and external partners, via strategically planned events, to showcase the program’s work as well as generate support for future initiatives.
Qualified candidates will have proven experience in managing complex programs, preferably in a healthcare or AI-related field, along with a strong understanding of policy, regulatory compliance, and technical aspects of program management. Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to foster relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and handle multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines.
Duties include:
- Lead the planning and operations for programs or functions that have significant business, regulatory and/or technical challenges requiring subject matter expertise.
- Evaluate programs or functions, policies and procedures. Identify issues, and develop alternative solutions which may include changes to programs, policies and procedures.
- Review and analyze trends to advise and develop recommendations to achieve or modify the goals of the program or function.
- Represent the program or function within the department, unit or school. Commit resources and provide information and/or training. Represent the program or function at the university level and/or to external/internal stakeholders and constituencies.
- Manage and contribute to the development of outreach strategy that may include relationship development, communications and compliance.
- May develop and/or oversee budgets; manage finances including monitoring, analyzing, forecasting, and reporting.
- Assess training needs and may develop associated training.
- May direct and/or supervise staff.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Multiple years of administrative experience in the academic setting, with expertise in communications, project management, educational event planning, industry relations and managing strategic initiatives.
- Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in relevant field such as in biomedical informatics, computer science, health informatics, etc. is highly desired.
- Experience developing and writing grant applications.
- Experience with interdisciplinary teams, especially in healthcare AI or data science settings.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
- Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
